What you should know about used Toyota pickups

Toyota Tacoma is the most reliable mid-size pickup on the market and holds its value harder than nearly any other vehicle in any segment. Expect to pay a premium for a used Tacoma compared to its competitors — and expect to get most of that premium back when you sell. The Tundra full-size pickup is sold in lower volumes, so finding a specific configuration takes patience. Common Toyota powertrains are bulletproof; the most common service items on high-mileage trucks are timing components, water pumps, and the occasional secondary air injection pump on early Tundras.

On the used market, the most important questions to ask about any Toyota pickup are the same questions you should ask about any used truck: what was it used for, how often was the oil changed, and is there documented service history. Toyota trucks tend to attract owners who keep meticulous records — that is genuinely useful when you are evaluating a candidate. Ask for the maintenance binder. If the seller cannot produce one, ask the local Toyota dealership to pull the VIN history; most will do this for free for a serious buyer.

The model breakdown above shows where the heaviest used Toyota inventory is concentrated. If you are flexible on configuration, the highest-volume model in this list is almost always the easiest to get parts for and the most cost-effective to maintain. If you have a specific configuration in mind, our state breakdown will tell you exactly where to find it — and our comparison guides will help you decide whether the Toyota trim and powertrain you are eyeing actually beats the alternatives at your price point.

Click into any model above to see year-by-year specs (towing, payload, available engines, common issues) and current used market value ranges. The model-year detail pages are the deepest research surface on this site — use them.
