Gas vs Diesel Used Pickups: The Honest Cost Breakdown

Diesel pickup premium, fuel cost differences, maintenance reality, and the mileage threshold where a used diesel actually pays off vs a gas truck.

Diesel pickup buyers are convinced their trucks are cheaper to own than gas equivalents. Gas truck buyers are convinced the diesel premium is wasted money. Both groups are right, depending on use case. Here are the actual numbers.

The diesel premium in real money

On the used market, an equivalent diesel half-ton costs $4,000–$8,000 more than its gas-engined twin. On heavy-duty trucks, the diesel premium runs $9,000–$13,000 over the gas alternative. That is real money — money that has to be earned back through fuel savings, lower drivetrain wear, or higher resale.

Side-by-side cost-per-mile

Gasoline V8 Half-Ton

~17 mpg combined

Annual fuel (15k mi @ $3.50/gal): ~$3,090

Maintenance per year: $700–$1,200

Engine cost to overhaul: $4,500–$7,500

Diesel I6 Half-Ton

~24 mpg combined

Annual fuel (15k mi @ $4.00/gal): ~$2,500

Maintenance per year: $1,200–$2,500

Engine cost to overhaul: $9,000–$18,000

The break-even mileage

To recover an $8,000 used-market diesel premium through fuel savings alone (assuming the gas truck does 17 mpg combined and the diesel does 24 mpg, with diesel fuel running $0.50/gal more than gas), you need to drive roughly 110,000 miles after purchase. Below that threshold, the gas truck is the cheaper option on a strict total-cost-of-ownership basis. Above it, the diesel pulls ahead — assuming nothing major breaks on the more expensive diesel emissions system.

The non-financial reasons to pick diesel

Plenty of buyers pick diesel for reasons that are not strictly about money: torque (a 6.7L Cummins puts down 1,000+ lb-ft, which a gas V8 cannot match), towing range (better mpg means more miles between fuel stops while pulling a trailer), and engine longevity (modern diesels routinely cross 300,000 miles where gas engines start showing their age at 200,000). Those reasons are valid and well-supported. Just do the math first so you know what they are costing you.
